Library and Work Sniglets (taken from many sources including Information Today's "Words at Work"

Meeting Moth: a person (usually a manager) who flits from meeting to meeting but rarely acting on or absorbing any of what has taken place at these meetings.

Netscuse: describes any general Internet or computer slow down or outage that can be used to excuse not finishing a task.

Digital amnesia: the result of being so overwhelmed by the availability and volume of digital info. that you cannot remember any of it or where you might have put it on your computer.

Ringxiety: triggered by cell phone ringing making everyone in a meeting or public place simultaneously reach for their phone before the embarrassing second ring occurs.

Airball: corporate version of a hairball. someone who makes a lot of noise, disrupts everything, and has the potential to make a big mess but ultimately does nothing.

Destinesia: a temp. condition that explains the dumb look on your face when you arrive at your destination and but can't remember why you are there.

Microwaiting: the minutes wasted spent in front of the microwave waiting for your lunch to cook or heat up.

Multislacking: the act (or art) of performing multiple non-productive tasks at once. Like simulaneously talking on the phone, surfing the web, and watching TV.

Thinko: like a typo in your brain, a cognitive error or mistake.

WYSITWIRL: (pronounced "wis-it-wirl" meaning What You See Is Totally Worthless In Real Life.

Ahhhhhhhhh, all done. Can it really be? I can't believe it! This was fun and I'm going to use a lot of this stuff. Library Thing, podcasts, RSS, delicious and YouTube were my favorites. But I've also used Technorati and Gutenberg to answer reference questions already so I'm getting a lot of mileage out of the 23 things! Great to be done, though. Now I can go back and play with the stuff I liked best!

Thing 22 - eBooks

I have a Mac so OverDrive and NetLibrary are useless to me. But that forced me to explore Project Gutenberg which was really better than it was a few years ago. I found a good deal of useful titles there! The download or "opening" of the book was down in like 2 seconds! I was amazed!

oh, I added NPRs Book Review to my Bloglines. How cool! Maybe I can add something like this to the Virtual Book Club page?!? I'm going to be using podcasts more often now! Fun and easy and most are free! GREAT!

Thing 19, Web 2.0 Awards

Zoho is having troubles loading so I'm using google docs here. I wanted to check out Zoho notebook or presenter but can't right now.

Nice features here in google docs - colored text, highlight text, ok had a little trouble getting that to turn off! a few different fonts, how about ~~strikethrough, ok can't get this to tun of either.~~ Looks like it is best to type all your stuff and then come back and add, highlight, strikeout or whatever to avoid not being able to get them to turn off.

I was hoping to use the Zoho notebook, I can get to the home page but after that nothings loading. Oh, well, maybe it will work tomorrow. Or maybe I'll try Backpack from Backpackit.com which I found on the web 2.0 Awards under "Organization".

Thing 18, Online Applications & Tools

Oh, I like these a lot. Where was this stuff when I was in college? I could really used a portable desktop then! I'm trying to come up with a good way to set up a web site for a group to allow them to communicate and organize their events and Zoho's Notebook or Backpackit might work for this. I tried to register for Zoho but kept getting an error message though. Google docs worked so no I'll try to post something from there to here.

Thing 17, 2.0 Sandbox wiki

Ok, I added my blog to the Sandbox but it only appears on the page that lists the blogs in chronological order?!? I'm not sure if I should go back and add it to the wiki page that is arranged by "Library System" or not. Any hints?

Also found some really cool stuff while looking at other library blogs and somehow wound up joining MySpace (something I never thought I would do) so I could post a comment about a video (which I originally found on YouTube) on the author's MySpace page. I have to say, I really like MySpace and can see why it is so very popular!

I have a feeling I'm going to like the online productivity tools as well. I'm already using Open Office with good results but that does still require you download software even though it is free. I can see the appeal of the online apps and think I might become a regular user of these.

I love wikis, they are so cool. I think BCPL should use a wiki for the Virtual Book Club (VBC) to increase interest and participation.

And/or BCPL should create something like the Princeton Public Library's Book Lovers wiki where customers post reviews of books they have read.

I noticed many libraries using wikis for this type of thing and think it's a really great way to get customers involved with the library. Customers creating content = sounds like fun and would be a sure hit with those who are already using the web in this way.

Well, I palyed around with it and my first attempt works fairly well. Now I'm thinking I might want to make several of these; one for genealogy and family history searches and maybe one for local history and one for vactions and one for....

I like the Avitars. I especially like the name. It reminds me of the first (chronologically that is) Star Wars movie with of all those fun, unusual names like R2D2, ObiWan, C3PO and Tatooine. Yes, I did see it in this in the movie theater!
Plaiying with avitars was fun. Not sure yet what I might use Avitars for for in the future... but one never knows. If I can ever get it together in my "first life", maybe I can visit and use my Avitar in Second Life.

I like Merlin. Already has lots o' links to fun techie/library stuff and very nicely organized! I'll be book marking that one and visiting again. I've got about 15 or so blogs and sites in my bloglines and just added more - a few of the of the library blogs. I love accessing this stuff but NOT getting all this stuff in my email box! Cool tools!

Not really a Thing: The Web, It's Not Just About Surfing Anymore!

I've heard a few people say, "what's this 23 Things stuff all about?" and I'm thinking, "Who cares! We get to play with new, cool, techie stuff at work and I could win a prize". No, seriously, it is not about technology or the Internet. Well, ok, it does have that stuff in there BUT the core of the matter is about learning new things and adapting. It is also about "interacting" with the Internet rather than just being a passive visitor. Creating and collaborating are the new concepts here. And library people are, in my experience, a very creative lot. Rather than just "surfing the web" we can help build it! How cool is that? Just a thought....

I like all the web 2.0 stuff because I can interact with it and do stuff to it! I especially like all the digital photo goodies - using digital cameras and storing photos digitally is great! Sharing photos this way is so much easier! I wonder how long it will take me to scan all my old photos so I can have them in digital format, as well? Guess that should keep me busy for the next few decades!

I loved Flickr, all the photo sharing, web album sites and mash ups! This is so much fun! I've been wanting the find a way to better share my photos with family and friends. Now I know lots of ways to do this, all I have to do is decide which one of them to use. Enjoyed laerning 3rd party apps - Montagr and Mapr.

7 1/2 Habits of Lifelong Learners

Easiest thing for me - "View problems as challenges". This reminds me of another similar adage I love which is, "Think of roadblocks as stepping stones". These concepts really help keep me from getting overwhelmed at times.
Hardest thing for me - "Begin with the end in mind". This is a great concept! So simple yet, so easy to overlook.

OK, I'm done setting up my blog! Yea! When I first viewed my blog, it was displaying in some laugage other than English and I was not sure what it was at first! It took me about 10 minutes to find the language thingamabob and switch it back to English. Turns out it was Finnish! How the heck did that happen?!?! Anyway, looking forward to learning about this kewl new stuff!
